exerpt:

Star Lake Amphitheatre's owners claimed the venue had a good first year. Now comes some independent confirmation. Performance magazine listed Star Lake as the seventh-largest grossing outdoor amphitheater in the country last year in its year-end awards issue.

Pittsburgh venues seem to have done well all the way around in 1990. Performance listed the Syria Mosque as the eighth-largest grossing theater under 5,000 seats, and the A.J. Palumbo Center as the fifth-largest grossing auditorium under 7,000 seats.

In addition, DiCesare-Engler Productions was listed as the 17th most successful promoter in the country last year, based on the number of shows promoted, tickets sold and box office grosses.

JUMBO PALUMBO: According to Performance magazine, the A.J. Palumbo Theatre is one of America's top-grossing concert halls in its class. Performance has the Palumbo listed sixth out of nine in the category of "Top Grossing Arena/ Auditoriums With a Capacity of 5,000-6,999."

The other venues include New York's Radio City Music Hall and Paramount, the MCA Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles and Bill Graham's Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The Palumbo, located on the Duquesne University campus, is managed by DiCesare-Engler Productions.

UB40 COMING: Speaking of the Palumbo, British pop-reggae band UB40 plays there on Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. The band, which recently hit the charts with a version of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love," sold-out the I.C. Light Amphitheatre earlier this year.

Tickets -- $25 and $19.75 -- go on sale Monday at all National Record Marts, CoGo's and the Palumbo box office. To charge, call 391-1111.
'DECENT' RAP: DC Talk -- a Christian band that mixes rap, rock and soul -- plays the Palumbo on April 17 at 7 p.m. The group's most recent album, ''Free at Last," topped Billboard's Contemporary Christian charts for 29 weeks.

Tickets, $12.75, go on sale Monday at the same locations, plus all Christian book stores.
